Tesco gluten free birthday cake – Carl the Caterpillar
When I was younger and before being diagnosed with coeliac disease, my mum would often buy me and my twin sister a Colin the Caterpillar cake from Marks and Spencer’s for our birthday. After missing out on Colin for the last six birthdays, I was chuffed to bits to not only find a gluten free birthday cake, but Colin’s long lost brother Carl in Tesco!
Carl the Caterpillar is a chocolate flavoured swiss roll filled with chocolate flavoured buttercream, covered in milk chocolate and finished with sweet decorations. Priced at £6, I think this is really reasonable for a birthday cake that serves 12 people and also only £1 more than their non gluten free equivalent ‘Curly the Caterpillar’.
When at the Allergy and Free From show last weekend in Liverpool, I had the opportunity to taste it. The sponge is soft with a generous amount of buttercream and chocolate. The decorations and packaging are also colourful, making this really stand out on the shelf and the cake itself comes on a board making it really easy to serve.
I give this product the thumbs up and look forward to the 7th September when I can blow out the candles on this cake again…and eat it!
If you’re buying this for a celebration and would like to try your hand at baking some other gluten free products, why not try my gluten free bread recipe, it makes a lovely crusty loaf and perfect for sandwiches!
