Product review: No.G Chicken, Bacon and Leek Pie
I came across the No.G pie range whilst shopping in Sainsbury’s late last year. A Coeliac UK registered product – No.G pies are made by Riverside Bakery in Nottingham which has been a Master Piemaker and Baker since 1931. It’s product range was launched in April at the 2014 Food & Drink Expo where it scooped top place in the innovation award.
Gluten free products have grown considerably in supermarkets over the last few years but pastry products are still relatively hard to come by, probably due to them being the most difficult to master successfully, so I was pleased to see the No.G pie range enter the market.
I bought the gluten free shortcrust pastry filled with chicken, maple cure smoked bacon and leeks in a rich creamy sauce, topped with a gluten free pastry lid. The pie was priced at £2.50 at Sainsbury’s and after a little internet research, I found you can buy three for £6 at Ocado making the price more comparable to non gluten free products. The pies can also be frozen and the website states that you just need to increase the cooking time by ten minutes.
Down to the important bit…how did they taste?
I can honestly say these are the best pies I have ever tried and coeliacs need to go out and try them so that they remain on our supermarket shelves! The meat is high quality, the pastry is very light and the pie is generously filled. They’re very filling so go perfectly with a side salad or for full on indulgence, serve with potatoes or chips!
Since buying the chicken pie I have also tried the steak and ale version which is just as tasty and they also offer a range of sweet pies including treacle tart, blueberry and vanilla cheesecake and chocolate and morello cherry tart.
Other products in the range include:
Steak & Ale Pie – Gluten free shortcrust pastry filled with slow-cooked beef in a rich ‘against the grain’ ale gravy. Topped with a gluten free shortcrust pastry lid.
Vegetable Pie – A cheesy vegetable sauce topped with butternut squash, spinach and char grilled red peppers.
