A Gluten Free Christmas
Being a coeliac doesn’t mean you should miss out on all the traditional treats that come with the festive season.
In this month’s BBC Good Food magazine, it was good to see gluten free products featured amongst the big supermarket Christmas food test. Taking over five weeks to complete, Good Food blind-tasted more than 240 products (gluten and gluten free) to create the ultimate best buys collection.
The following were ranked as top gluten free choices:
Tescos Free From mince pies – £2 for 4
“Serve as a dessert – with a fairly thick and cake-like pastry, these mince pies will work well as a dessert with cream. They taste even better once heated up.”
Booths gluten free mince pies – £2.29 for 6
“Really crisp pastry with a lovely sticky, rich filling. These pies are a good, chunky shape and will appeal to most tastes.”
Centrepiece cake – M&S made without gluten Christmas cake – £12
“This cake was the most attractive gluten-free cake we tried. It has a sticky middle with an added hit of booze.”
No pastry quiche – No.G mini cheese and onion pastryless quiche – £3.99 180g
“We like the whole range of No.G gluten free canapes – these look pretty, wrapped up in paper.”
Christmas pudding – Sainsburys £3.99 454g
“A sweet, mild pudding, with a coarse texture and fruity flavours. This has more citrus notes than any other puds we tried.”
A few personal festive favourites:
Waitrose LOVE life 4 mince pies – £2.50 for 4
M&S Pork & Chestnut Stuffing
M&S pigs in blankets (16)
